When you go to each job board that deals with the Digital/Internet/Online/Web Marketing niche you can find many different job titles. They all refer, in general, to the same job role; but which one is the right job title for us? The online/digital/Internet marketing gurus?

It’s hard to answer this kind of question, but we will try to use our knowledge with online tools to answer the terrible conundrum of not understanding our job title.

We all know there are a lot of subcategories of online/digital/Internet marketing—such as: SEO (Search Engine Optimization), SEM (Search Engine Marketing), SMO (Social Media Optimization), PPC (Pay Per Click), Inbound Marketing, and so on. Based on the subcategories, I think the right title for us as Web gurus should be “Online Marketing”—more so than the two others.

But let’s look at the numbers to tell us the true story (we all love numbers) …

I will let Google to tell us which job title is more searchable:

google organic searches for the job title

We have data from our own Web site as the leading niche job board in the U.S., and we can get some numbers for these job titles. So we took last year’s stats, and the numbers you will see below are the percentages of times one out of the three is in the job title.

Are we working as Digital Marketing Managers?

By Wikipedia: Digital marketing applies to technologies or platforms such as Web sites, e-mail, apps (classic and mobile), and social networks.

Based on that information we handle Web sites & mobiles, so is it the answer? Let’s look at the numbers again to decide:

Amount of Google Organic searches for the keyword: 12,100 (May 2014)

Amount of jobs posted in SEOJobsFinder.com (yearly): 45%

Are we working as Internet Marketing Managers?

By Wikipedia: Internet Marketing is e-mail marketing, search engine marketing, social media marketing, many types of display advertising (including Web banner advertising), and mobile advertising.

Based on that information, it looks like a more suitable term for us, but it’s still more specific for us than Online. I know a lot of people will say online=Internet. But, I see Online as all of the ways available to obtain information (mobile, desktop, tablet, and so on) and Internet as desktop only.

Let’s look again at the numbers to choose:

Amount of Google Organic searches for the keyword: 9,900 (May 2014)

Amount of jobs posted in SEOJobsFinder.com (yearly): 35%

Are we working as Online Marketing Managers?

By Techopedia: Wikipedia doesn’t have a specific page for “Online Marketing”): Online marketing refers to a set of powerful tools and methodologies used for promoting products and services through the Internet.

Based on that information, it looks like it’s a more suitable term for us.

Let’s look one last time at the numbers to choose:

Amount of Google Organic searches for the keyword: 6,600 (May 2014)

Amount of jobs posted in SEOJobsFinder.com (yearly): 20%

In our website we use the option of “Online Marketing” as a job category. Although this title has the lowest amount of searches and job titles, we see “Online Marketing” as the correct title—the one that describes the main job role.
